Introduction to Legal Research

Secondary Sources

Secondary sources are background materials that describe an area of law. They are resources about the law, not the law itself. Secondary sources help researchers understand parameters of a research topic. In addition, these materials detail and provide context to a legal issue and may identify relevant statutes, regulations, and cases. Frequently used secondary sources include databases, legal dictionaries, legal encyclopedias, and treatises.
