Benefits:
  • Article Processing Charge: Waived

Note: There are no page charges or other author fees.

  • Easily comply with research funders with open access stipulations
  • The author retains copyright control of their work
  • The author may choose to publish open access

SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics) will retroactively, at the author’s request, flip papers to Open Access that were submitted during the term of this agreement.

  • Open Access articles will be published under a Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0 Attribution license:

Ownership of copyright in the article and all other proprietary rights remain with the Eligible Authors. The Eligible Authors retain the rights to reproduce, distribute, and publicly display the article in any form or medium; to prepare derivative works from the article; and to authorize others to make any use of the article, provided that proper full attribution is given to the original SPIE publication.

To be eligible, articles must:
  • Have a corresponding author affiliated with The University of Texas at Dallas
  • Be original research (conference proceedings excluded - an OA fee is charged to the author if that option is chosen)
  • Have manuscript accepted for publication
  • Be accepted for publication from August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2026

"Where Do I Begin?"

Using the transformative agreement is a seamless part of the normal manuscript submission process. To get started, go to the Submit Your Research to an SPIE Journal page, where each publication is presented along with its scope and details, authorship info, call for papers, submission process, and more.

When ready, click the "Submit a Manuscript" button to access the submission portal. The form includes all the standard required information, plus an Open Access section. Use the PDF file below to review our recommended responses.

NOTE: It is important that you use your '@utdallas.edu' email address as the corresponding author, and that you select University of Texas at Dallas from the Institution list at the bottom of the Open Access section. This is what prompts SPIE to waive the Article Processing Charge.
