Music Concentration Overview
The Music Concentration within the BA in Visual and Performing Arts is designed for students who want to develop their musical skills and deepen their understanding of music’s history, theory, and creative practice. Whether you sing, play an instrument, compose, or study music academically, this program provides a dynamic and interdisciplinary foundation for exploring your artistry. Students engage in solo and ensemble performance, music theory and composition, and music history, feeding both technical expertise and creative expression.
Key Aspects of the Program
Students in the Music Concentration receive a well-rounded education that combines focused music study with the flexibility of interdisciplinary coursework. Private instruction in their primary instrument or voice, a variety of ensemble opportunities, and a strong foundation in music theory and history equip students with both technical skills and artistic depth. The program encourages connections between musical interests and other creative disciplines, offering a broad perspective that enhances artistry and professional preparation. Music concentration students must complete a senior project, which showcases their expertise through a recital, scholarly paper, or substantive musical composition.
The Bass School also offers concerts in three major series: the Classical Music Series (including symphonic, chamber, voice, and choral concerts), the Guitar Series (featuring our Annual Texas Guitar Competition and Festival), and the Jazz Series (highlighting outstanding solo and group artists). Student concerts are presented throughout the academic year, including performances at the end of each long semester, giving students valuable opportunities to perform publicly and showcase their work.
