Sustainability

About This Guide

To begin, what does sustainability mean? According to the United Nations, they define it as...

“[M]eeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Furthermore, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that...

"Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations."

It should be noted that while there's significant overlap between sustainability and environmental science, they are distinct, separate subjects. For more information, please refer to this online article from Peterson's linked here.
