Colors of Chemistry

Native Americans named their home in the
southeastern United States the land of blue
smoke, or Shaconage. However, the blue
haze that still blankets this region, including
the peaks and valleys of the aptly named Blue
Ridge Mountains, has little to do with smoke.
In fact, the haze occurs naturally when
hydrocarbons emitted from trees and other
vegetation form a blue light-reflecting aerosol
in the atmosphere above the forest canopy.
While this phenomenon explains why the blue
haze exists, a more fundamental question
remains—why do plants emit hydrocarbons
in the first place? One clue is that the blue
haze is typically most prevalent in the summer
months, when higher temperatures impede
plant photosynthesis. Research suggests that
many species of plants overcome this problem
by emitting isoprene. This ubiquitous hydrocarbon
effectively increases a plant’s tolerance
to heat, allowing it to continue producing
energy even during the warmest days of
summer.
